How microplastics get into your body – level 3
30-03-2026 15:00
Plastic is no longer just in our environment; it is inside our bodies. Microplastics and nanoplastics enter our bodies through the air we breathe, the skin, and especially through what we eat and drink.
Everyday items like plastic cutting boards, bottled water, and microwavable containers release millions of particles. Once inside, these tiny invaders can pass through cell membranes and settle in our tissues. They cause long-term inflammation because the body can’t break them down. Besides physical damage, plastics contain over 16,000 chemicals. Some of these, such as BPA and phthalates, are so-called endocrine disruptors that disrupt our hormones. They are linked to serious health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and lower fertility.
While we cannot easily remove plastic from our bodies, we can reduce our exposure by choosing natural fibers, using glass or stainless steel containers, and avoiding single-use plastics. However, experts say that solving this problem will require new laws and global regulations to limit plastic production.
Difficult words: invader (a person or a thing that enters a place where it is not wanted), membrane (a very thin layer that covers and protects a cell), exposure (being in contact with something, such as sunlight, chemicals, or plastic, which might affect you).
