Hungary and Slovakia do not send fuel to Ukraine – level 3

25-02-2026 07:00

Hungary and Slovakia have stopped sending diesel to Ukraine because oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline were damaged.

Both countries say Ukraine hasn’t fixed the pipeline and call this a political choice. Hungary also said Ukraine tried to use energy as a tool to influence politics.

The pipeline was damaged by a Russian air strike, which stopped oil transfers at the end of January. Officials from both countries said they have enough fuel for their own people but want to keep diesel inside their borders. Slovakia has also used emergency oil reserves to secure its domestic supply. Hungary and Slovakia asked the European Commission to allow Russian oil to move through Croatia, but Croatia said it could break US sanctions. The European Commission said that both countries have enough energy and their safety is not at risk.

Ukraine is facing serious energy problems because Russian attacks damaged its infrastructure during winter, and the diesel halt makes the situation worse.

Difficult words: pipeline (a long tube that moves oil or gas from one place to another), reserve (extra supply kept for future use), halt (to stop something from moving or happening).
