Indonesia’s Vice President has problems with school papers – level 3
12-10-2026 15:00
Indonesia’s top court has thrown out a case against Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka over his high school credentials.
Gibran is the oldest son of former President Joko Widodo. Critics claimed his high school diploma didn’t meet national requirements for office and wanted to remove him. Under Indonesian election laws, anyone running for vice president must finish high school or must hold a qualification equivalent to it. All nine judges dismissed the case for legal reasons. They said petitioners didn’t have the right to do so because they were not candidates in the 2024 election.
Also, since Gibran has already been sworn in, it is too late to change the election results. However, the judges pointed out that nobody actually showed a graduation certificate to prove his foreign credentials match local standards. So while Gibran remains in power, this issue might cause more trouble for him later on.
Difficult words: credentials (official documents or achievements that prove your skills, background, or education), equivalent (having the same value, amount, or importance as something else), swear (to make a serious formal promise to tell the truth or perform official duties).

What reasons did the nine judges give for dismissing the case against Gibran, and what unresolved issue about his qualifications did they highlight?
