Iran Nuclear Program – level 3

The Iranian government made an agreement with other countries not to work on developing nuclear weapons. In 2018, the US pulled out of that agreement.

Last year, Iran enriched uranium at levels a little above what agreed to. The Iranian government said that it would enrich more uranium if it did not get relief from sanctions.

The other countries that were part of the deal – China, France, Germany, Russia, and the UK – have been working to sustain the agreement.

Recently, the US killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, and now people are worried that Iran will restart the progress on its nuclear program due to revenge. However, Iran has 5 percent enriched uranium now; it needs 90 percent enriched uranium to create a bomb.

Difficult words: enriched uranium (uranium is a special substance that breaks down unusually; if you enrich it by adding other substances to it, you can use it to create a power plant or a weapon), sanction (a punishment on a country, such as not trading or doing business with that country), sustain (continue, support).
