Kenya AI workers – level 2

10-03-2025 07:00

In Kenya, workers are speaking out about their difficult jobs. They spend long hours checking and sorting online content to help improve artificial intelligence (AI) systems. But they earn very little and say the work is emotionally hard.

Joanne explains that she labeled images and videos, including violent and upsetting content. Stacy, another worker, checked TikTok videos and saw scenes such as accidents and crimes. Many workers feel stressed and have nightmares. Some companies offer therapy, but it is not enough.

Experts say AI companies should pay workers fairly and provide better conditions. Workers are now forming groups to fight for their rights. If nothing changes, more workers will have problems while big companies make a lot of money.

Difficult words: speak out (to say openly what you think), earn (to make money), violent (using force to hurt or attack).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the emotional impacts workers face from labeling violent or distressing online content, and what measures are being proposed or taken to improve their working conditions?
