Kilmar García back in the US – level 3
10-06-2025 15:00
Kilmar García, a man wrongly deported to El Salvador in March, is now back in the US and has been indicted.
The US attorney general confirmed that García faces two federal charges: conspiracy to transport undocumented migrants and unlawful transportation of them.
Authorities believe García helped smuggle migrants from Central America into the US over nine years. Though undocumented himself, García had a court order blocking his deportation because he argued he faced danger in El Salvador. His case drew political attention, reaching the Supreme Court, which ruled he must return to the US to get due process. A past traffic stop in Tennessee raised suspicions of human trafficking, but no charges were made at the time.
García’s family denies the claims, saying he worked in construction. Despite that, the federal indictment now links him to about 100 smuggling trips. Once his legal case ends, he is expected to be deported again.
Difficult words: indicted (formally charged), conspiracy (a secret plan to do something illegal), due process (fair legal treatment).
