Londoners help single friends – level 2

31-03-2026 07:00

Many young people in London are tired of dating apps like Tinder. They think swiping on a phone is not a good way to meet a boyfriend or girlfriend. Now, they are going to Date My Mate nights at the pub.

At these events, a person stands up and shows a presentation about their single friend. They show photos and tell the crowd why their friend is great. For example, one friend joked that her mate is an engineer, so she can support a partner.

These events are very popular, and tickets sell out very fast. People like this because it is more fun than an app, and their friends can help them find love. It is a new way to meet real people in a real place.

Difficult words: swipe (to move your finger quickly across the screen of a phone), presentation (a talk where you show information, pictures, or ideas to a group of people on a screen), crowd (a large group of people in one place, like a pub or a concert).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
