Malaysia’s durian is becoming popular – level 2
13-10-2026 15:00
Malaysia is working hard to promote its durian fruit to the world, especially to buyers in China. In Kuala Lumpur, businesses are creating new durian products like ice cream and cakes, and opening special centers for tourists.
China imports a lot of durian, but most of it currently comes from Thailand. Malaysian durians are special because farmers let them ripen on the tree and fall naturally. This gives a great taste, but the fruit spoils in just two or three days, which makes transport difficult.
Malaysia started sending fresh durians to China in 2024, and sales grew quickly in 2026. Sellers say durian is a luxury food, so people buy it mainly when the economy is good. Social media is now helping more Chinese tourists discover and try Malaysian durians.
Difficult words: promote (to make people to buy, use, or support something), currently (right now), ripen (to become fully grown and ready to eat).
