Musk’s hand gesture – level 2

24-01-2025 15:00

Elon Musk made a hand gesture during a speech at Trump’s inauguration, which caused debate. Musk touched his chest and extended his arm, which some say looked like a Nazi salute.

In Germany, such gestures are illegal and connected to Adolf Hitler. People disagreed about the gesture. Some historians said it looked like a Nazi salute, but others, like the Anti-Defamation League, said it was not. Musk defended himself on X, saying critics were wrong.

This happened after Musk supported Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. People see the party as extreme and anti-immigration. Musk also made a mistake when he called Hitler a communist, which made many people worry about his actions.

Difficult words: gesture (when you move your hand to express something), debate (when people talk about something a lot), salute (a formal sign which soldiers usually do).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What was the controversy surrounding Elon Musk's hand gesture during a speech at Trump's inauguration and his support for Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party?
