Nantes slave trade memorial – level 1
03-03-2025 15:00
Nantes is an important port in France. Many years ago, ships from Nantes take people from Africa and sell them as slaves.
Today, the city remembers this with a special memorial. It shows ship names and trade records. The museum also has old documents, paintings, and objects from that time.
In the 18th century, Nantes sends more than 500,000 slaves people to other countries. A painting called Marie-Séraphique shows how they live on ships. Visitors also see chains and other objects from this activity.
The city wants people to learn about racism and history. Some people forget the past, but Nantes chooses to explain it. Now, it helps people understand and remember.
Difficult words: slave (a person who is not free and must work for someone else), memorial (a place or object which helps people remember something important), record (information about the past).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Which specific items preserved in Nantes help visitors grasp the realities of its past involvement in the slave trade?
