Navalny gets 19 more years in prison – level 2

09-08-2023 07:00

Russian opposition leader and a strong critic of President Putin Alexei Navalny, received an additional 19-year prison term in a high-security prison.

This comes on top of his ongoing 11.5-year sentence for alleged fraud. Navalny believes that these charges are part of a plan to destroy political opposition. He expressed this in Melekhovo, where a judge issued the verdict. Navalny said that this sentence was a way how to frighten Russians.

The U.S. and EU demanded that Navalny be set free. Many people see Navalny’s imprisonment as a symbol of a fight against Putin’s rule.

Difficult words: ongoing (still happening), alleged (supposed), imprisonment (when someone is in prison).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the international community doing to pressure the Russian government to release Alexei Navalny?
