New rules for bikers in Japan – level 2

06-04-2026 15:00

In Japan, the police have new rules for people on bicycles. Last year, there were many accidents because cyclists didn’t follow the law.

Now, if you do something dangerous, the police can give you a blue ticket, and you must pay a fine. For example, you cannot use a phone or hold an umbrella while you ride. You must also stop at red lights and stay off the sidewalk in some areas. Many people are buying raincoats now because they cannot use umbrellas anymore.

The police want everyone to be safe, especially people who are walking. If you are 16 or older, you must follow these rules or pay a fine.

Difficult words: fine (an amount of money you must pay for breaking a rule or law), sidewalk (the path next to the road for people to walk on), raincoat (a special coat that you wear to stay dry when it is raining).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why are many people buying raincoats now?
