New York earthquake – level 2

11-04-2024 07:00

A rare earthquake hit New Jersey. It caused buildings in New York City and nearby areas to shake.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.8. It occurred around 10:20 local time. Luckily, it didn’t cause big damage. A UN Security Council paused a meeting in New York because of the earthquake. People said that they could feel the shaking for about 15 to 20 seconds.

Earthquakes are not usual in New York, but they happened before. The most recent one happened in January 2024. It surprised many, but experts believe it will not have a big impact on local people.

Difficult words: shake (to move quickly from side to side), magnitude (a number which says how strong an earthquake is), recent (happening not long ago).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the most recent earthquake that occurred in New Jersey and New York, and how did it affect the local people?
