Northern Lights – level 2

15-05-2024 07:00

Our planet is experiencing a powerful magnetic storm, the most powerful in over 20 years.

The sky all over the northern hemisphere has rare and beautiful colors, which we don’t usually see so far from the poles. This event is happening because sunspots come together and they make a strong solar flare. Gas bubbles from the Sun are making a special show in the sky. Even though not everyone can see it, some people might get another chance to see the pretty lights in the sky. But the storm may not be so strong therefore, the colors may be less bright.

In our modern time, we use a lot of technology, which we depend on a lot. Experts worry that these storms may affect our technologies and cause disruptions. They may cause problems with power and communication.

Difficult words: northern hemisphere (the northern half of Earth), flare (a sudden flame), disruption (problems which interrupt an event or activity).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How does the powerful magnetic storm and solar flare mentioned in the text affect technology and daily life?
