Parents take children out of big schools – level 3

06-11-2026 15:00

More Danish parents are pulling their children out of mainstream schools. They argue that the traditional education system is far too rigid for neurodivergent kids.

Children with autism or attention disorders, like 12-year-old Olav, often struggle with noisy classrooms and fixed daily schedules. Because public schools lack resources and specialized programs, many families have turned to alternative support systems, such as parent-led clubs. These spaces allow children to learn at their own pace through practical activities, like organic farming, while giving them a safe environment free from pressure.

While politicians worry about falling academic standards in reading and math, educational researchers argue that the school system itself needs urgent reform rather than forcing children to fit into outdated models. These alternative clubs aim to rebuild confidence and help kids rebuild their relationship with learning.

Difficult words: rigid (unable to be changed or adapted; strictly set), neurodivergent (having a brain that processes information differently than what is considered typical), academic standards (the levels of quality, knowledge, and achievement expected from students in school).
