People eat differently before Easter – level 2

07-04-2026 15:00

In Greece, many people follow a special food tradition every spring before Easter. For six weeks, they don’t eat meat, milk, or eggs. This is called a fast.

Monks in Greek monasteries follow these rules every day. They eat a lot of vegetables, beans, and potatoes. On most days, they don’t even use oil. They say this helps their minds stay strong and quiet. Doctors say this way of eating is good for the heart. It helps lower weight and keeps the blood healthy.

In the city, many people join the fast for at least one week. They buy seafood like shrimp or octopus because these are allowed. This tradition is a great way to clean the body and learn discipline. It is like a gym for the mind and the body.

Difficult words: monk (a man who lives in a religious group away from other people and follows strict rules), monastery (the building or place where a group of monks lives and prays together), discipline (when you can control what you do).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why do Greek monks avoid using oil on most days during the six-week fast?
