Russia floods – level 3

12-04-2024 07:00

Rapidly melting snow resulted in rivers reaching record-high levels and caused severe flooding in Russia and Kazakhstan. More than 100,000 people have been ordered to evacuate.

The floodwaters have overwhelmed settlements in various regions, including the Ural Mountains and Siberia. Officials are urging caution and immediate evacuation in affected areas. In Orenburg, the Ural River surpassed critical levels and prompted authorities to issue evacuation warnings. Emergency measures such as reinforcing dams and embankments are underway. The flood situation remains challenging as water levels are still rising.

President Putin and President Tokayev of Kazakhstan discussed the severity of the situation, and they stated that significant portions of both countries were affected by flooding.

Difficult words: reinforce (to support), embankment (a wall built to prevent a river from flooding an area), severity (seriousness).
