Russians like tea – level 2
28-10-2025 15:00
In Russia, some people now prefer tea instead of coffee because they see coffee as a Western drink.
A businessman, Andrei Kolbasinov, opened a chain of teahouses called Nitka. He wants Russians to enjoy tea again like they did before the 1917 Revolution. His teahouses look old-fashioned and offer a calm place for people to meet.
The change also shows how Russians focus more on their own culture and less on Western ideas after problems with the West. Many Russians still drink tea at home with jam or lemon. Some tea comes from China and Georgia because sanctions make trade with other countries difficult.
Difficult words: chain (a group of stores which one company owns), old-fashioned (not modern, something from the past), sanction (a rule which limits business or contact with a country).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What features of Andrei Kolbasinov’s Nitka teahouses reflect his goal of reviving traditional Russian tea drinking?
