Same-sex marriage legal in Greece – level 2

20-02-2024 15:00

Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country to allow same-sex marriage.

Some people, like the Orthodox Church, don’t agree with this change. But many others were happy about it and celebrated in Athens. The new law also gives more rights to same-sex parents. Even though some people still think there is more to improve, many people see this decision as a big step towards fairness.

In Greece’s Parliament, lawmakers from different political parties agreed on this change, which doesn’t usually happen. This decision may have an impact on other Orthodox countries, but it is not clear yet.

Difficult words: right (what you can have or do), fairness (when you are fair), lawmaker (a politician).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What impact might Greece's decision to allow same-sex marriage have on other Orthodox Christian countries, and how do you think this will affect the overall acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community in these countries?
