School costs in Europe – level 1
02-09-2025 07:00
School is very expensive in many European countries. Prices go up every year. Parents pay the most money for textbooks. In Spain, books are more than half of the costs. In Italy, families buy new editions and pay even more.
In Germany, school is very expensive. One child can cost 3,600 euros every year. School trips are the biggest part. In the UK, parents spend more than 2,600 euros. Food is very expensive. Snacks and meals take a lot of money, and uniforms are not cheap.
In France, school is not so expensive. Parents pay about 211 euros a year. Children get free textbooks, and every family gets 450 euros from the state. This helps many families.
Difficult words: textbook (a school book), costs (how much money you need to buy or do something), edition (a new version of a book).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Which expense accounts for the largest portion of the 3,600 euros spent annually per child in Germany?
