Scotland has a big problem with drugs – level 1

01-10-2026 07:00

Scotland has a big crisis. Over 11,000 people die from drugs in ten years. Last year, 1,133 people die because strong new drugs come to the country.

The problem starts long ago when many people lose their jobs. They have no money.  Political cuts to help centers also make things worse. Today, scientists test new drugs in a lab to keep people safe. Police work hard to stop dangerous drug sellers.

The government now gives more money for doctors, medicines, and help centers. These centers help people stop using drugs and start a happy, safe life again.

Difficult words: crisis (a difficult or dangerous time), cut (to reduce the money you give to someone to help), help center (a place which helps and gives medicine to people who need help).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How many people died from drugs in ten years, and how many died last year because strong new drugs came to the country?
