Shooter’s father guilty – level 1

21-03-2024 07:00

Ethan Crumbley kills four people in the Oxford high school shooting. The school is in Michigan, the United States. The boy is 17 years old now. He will stay in prison all his life.

Now a court says that Ethan’s father is guilty, too. This is the first time in the US that a parent is responsible for what their child does. The problem is that James does not keep his gun in a safe place. His son uses the gun to kill people. Before that, Ethan has mental problems. He calls for help. But his parents do nothing.

A court says that parents must be responsible for their children.

Difficult words: guilty (when a court says that you do something wrong), responsible (to have control over something or someone), mental (related to the mind or thinking).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the significance of this court ruling in holding parents accountable for their children's actions, and how could it potentially impact future cases involving parental negligence?
