Slovak PM visits Russia – level 3
13-05-2025 07:00
Thousands of protesters gathered in Freedom Square in the capital, Bratislava, and other Slovak cities to voice their objection to Prime Minister Robert Fico and oppose his policies.
Fico visited the Victory Day parade in Moscow, a major national event, and met Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was the only leader from the European Union to attend the celebrations.
People are angry because Fico’s visit is seen as support for Russia, especially while the war in Ukraine is still going on. The protesters shouted that Fico doesn’t represent them and that Slovakia belongs to Europe. Many Slovaks are worried about his political direction, especially his anti-European views and friendly attitude toward Russia. His government has been criticised for having pro-Kremlin opinions and saying negative things about the European Union and NATO.
Fico said he wants normal, friendly cooperation with Russia, and earlier, he had spoken with Putin about gas supplies. His political party returned to power in 2023 after winning an election with pro-Russian ideas. Since then, there have been more and more protests against his leadership.
Difficult words: voice (to say what you think or feel), objection (a reason why you don’t like or agree with something).
