Slovakia elections – level 2

04-10-2023 07:00

Robert Fico, a pro-Russian politician, won the Slovakian election last weekend. His party SMER-SSD secured nearly 23% of the vote, and he will try to form a new government.

Fico stands against the EU’s military support for Ukraine, just like Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban. While Fico wants to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine, he doesn’t want to provide them with weapons. Slovakia is a NATO member, but many people sympathize with Russia’s opinion that the West wants to harm Moscow.

This election represents a move away from political liberalism in central Europe, similar to the policies of Hungary’s Viktor Orban. Fico also intends to start border controls with Hungary to stop illegal migration.

Difficult words: humanitarian aid (sending material and food to people who need help), sympathize (to show support or agree with something), liberalism (openness to new ideas and opinions).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What steps does Robert Fico plan to take in order to limit illegal migration into Slovakia from Hungary?
