Smoke from Canada gets to Europe – level 1

30-06-2023 07:00

There are wildfires in Quebec and Ontario in Canada. The fires are very big. The smoke gets to Europe this week.

Pictures from NASA show a big cloud of smoke. It stretches across the Atlantic Ocean from Quebec. The smoke reaches the Azores islands on Sunday. It comes to Western Europe Spain, France, and Portugal on Monday. The smoke in Europe is higher in the sky than the smoke in the United States. It is about 1,100 meters high. It means that it is not dangerous for people. Experts say this high smoke will make pretty sunrises and sunsets in the next few days.

In Canada, more than 140 towns have warnings about air quality. The number of fires is going up. The fires will not end soon.

Difficult words: wildfire (a big fire which destroys forests or bushes), stretch (to go for a long way), quality (how good or bad something is).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What environmental impact could the smoke in Europe have on the continent?
