South Africa beats Italy at the World Cup – level 1

07-08-2023 07:00

South Africa wins their first Women’s World Cup match. They play against Italy. The score is 3-2.

Thembi Kgatlana scores the winning goal in the last moments of the game. This victory means that South Africa will move to the next round of the tournament. Italy needs only a draw to continue in the tournament. But it does not happen. They score the first goal from a penalty. Then, South Africa gets a point with an own goal. Later, South Africa is leading. Italy scores again from a corner. But Kgatlana’s goal ensures South Africa’s victory.

Coach Desiree Ellis says that the team fights hard. It is an important moment in South Africa’s history.

Difficult words: victory (the moment when someone wins), draw (when two teams or players score the same number of points in a game or match), ensure (to make sure that something will happen).
