South Sudan Facebook and TikTok ban – level 2

03-02-2025 15:00

South Sudan removed the ban on Facebook and TikTok. The government imposed the ban last week after videos showed the killing of South Sudanese people in Sudan.

Many people shared these videos, which caused protests and violence in South Sudan. The National Communications Authority confirmed that they removed the disturbing videos from the platforms.

Napoleon Adok Gai, the director of the National Communications Authority, said that social media violence shows the need to control harmful online content while protecting citizens’ rights.

Rights groups blame the Sudanese army for attacking people in Sudan and call it an ethnic attack. The Sudanese army says the incidents were just individual mistakes. Many people filmed and shared the videos, which made the situation worse.

Difficult words: impose (to put in place), citizen (the person who lives in a particular town or country), blame (to say that someone is responsible for a fault or wrong).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What was the reason for the South Sudan government's initial ban on Facebook and TikTok, and how did the National Communications Authority respond to the situation?
