Spain and Portugal blackouts – level 2
02-05-2025 07:00
There was a big problem with electricity in Spain and Portugal. The power stopped in many places and also affected some parts of France.
Trains and planes couldn’t move, traffic lights didn’t work, and there were many traffic jams. Shops closed, and people couldn’t use phones or pay by card. The Spanish government said people should only use phones when really needed.
No one knows for sure what caused the problem. Some people think it was a system problem, others believe it was because of the weather. The Portuguese government said the weather was the reason.
Some places now have power again, but many still don’t. It may take some days to fix everything. This event shows how important and weak the modern electricity system can be.
Difficult words: traffic jam (too many cars on a road), fix (to repair).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why did the Spanish government advise people to use phones only when really necessary?
