Storm Goretti hits Europe – level 2

13-01-2026 15:00

Storm Goretti brought strong winds, snow, and freezing weather to western Europe. Weather services gave serious warnings.

In southwest England, wind reached very high speeds and caused danger near the coast. In France, many homes lost electricity because strong winds damaged power lines. Northern Germany faced heavy snow and wind. Some places saw deep snow, and schools closed for safety. Officials told people not to travel unless necessary. Road workers cleared snow and added salt to reduce danger on streets and paths. Train companies reduced services, and airports warned travelers about delays and cancellations.

Some areas later faced weaker warnings, but cold weather stayed. People needed to stay careful and plan their travel carefully.

Difficult words: warning (a message which tells people about danger), unless (if not), cancellation (stopping something planned).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What steps did road workers take to reduce danger on streets and paths during the storm?
