Sudan humanitarian crisis – level 2
07-03-2025 15:00
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) stopped giving food to the Zamzam camp in Sudan. The war in the country is getting worse, and it is too dangerous for workers to stay.
Zamzam camp is in the Darfur region and has 500,000 refugees. The UN says many people there could die from hunger. The war started in April 2023 because the Sudanese army and a group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were fighting for power. In recent weeks, the area around Zamzam become very dangerous. People burn down shops, and there is little food.
Half of Sudan’s people, about 25 million, don’t know when they will eat again. Roads are bad, and soldiers check everything. The WFP asks the world to help, so food can arrive soon.
Difficult words: refugee (a person who runs away from their country because it is not safe to stay there), recent (happening not long ago).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What events led to worsening safety conditions in the area surrounding Zamzam camp and how have these challenges affected both the camp’s residents and the broader population in Sudan?
