Sydney must close its beaches – level 2

28-10-2026 07:00

Officials closed famous Australian beaches after a dead young whale washed up on rocky shores near Sydney. Lifeguards shut the beaches to keep swimmers safe because the whale carcass can attract dangerous sharks.

Local teams are trying to figure out how to handle the situation, but removing the heavy animal is extremely difficult. The ocean is rough, and the body is already breaking down. Experts say that more whales are migrating along the coast this season, which makes these events more common.

Indigenous groups are preparing special cultural ceremonies to respect the animal. For now, local leaders ask people to stay away from the water until the coast is clear and safe again.

Difficult words: carcass (the dead body of an animal), migrate (to move from one region to another according to the seasons), common (happening often).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why do experts say these events are becoming more common this season?
