Teachers in Romania protest – level 2
11-02-2026 07:00
Many teachers in Romania protested because the government wants to cut money for schools and universities. The Prime Minister’s government plans to reduce the salary fund by 10%.
Teachers said education already has little money, and blocking university income will make it hard to pay salaries and support research. University leaders agreed that the cuts would hurt education. Some compared Romania to Ukraine, where teachers’ pay is going up even during the war.
Teachers’ unions said they may strike if the cuts happen. They also started a petition to get 100,000 signatures to stop the new rules. The government will send the new plan to parliament on 20 February. The protests show that teachers want the government to keep money for schools and protect the future of students.
Difficult words: fund (money for a special purpose), block (to stop something from happening), salary (the money a person gets for their job), unions (groups that protect workers and speak for them).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What actions have teachers’ unions taken to oppose the government’s plan to cut the salary fund by 10%?
