The Amani Festival moves to another place – level 3
04-03-2026 07:00
For many years, the Amani Festival has been an important cultural event in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. However, because of insecurity and ongoing conflict, the 11th edition in 2026 will take place in Lubumbashi instead.
Organisers say that holding the festival in Goma would create serious problems, including possible cancellations by artists who cannot travel to an area no longer under government control. Since January 2025, Goma has been controlled by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, which has increased instability in the region.
Founded in 2014, the festival represents peaceful coexistence in an area affected by armed groups and violence. Many residents feel disappointed that it cannot be held in their city this year, but they understand that relocation may help the festival survive. Despite the move, organisers say the event’s mission remains the same: to promote culture, unity and hope, and to give young people a voice in a region long affected by war.
Difficult words: ongoing (still happening, not finished), instability (a situation that is not safe or not stable, with problems or conflict), coexistence (living together peacefully, even if people are different).
