The bears escape – level 3
04-07-2025 07:00
Two European brown bears, Mish and Lucy, escaped from their enclosure at Wildwood Devon, a wildlife park near Ottery St Mary, UK.
The five-year-old bears used the opportunity to eat a week’s supply of honey from the park’s food storage. The park stated that no visitors were ever in danger; however, as a safety measure, all guests were quickly moved to a secure building. Park staff monitored the bears using CCTV and kept a close watch on the ground. Eventually, Mish returned to the enclosure by himself, while Lucy was tempted back using a bell and her favorite treats. The bears then fell asleep peacefully. Police were called to the scene as a standard safety measure, and an investigation is ongoing to understand how the escape happened.
Mish and Lucy were originally rescued from a snow drift in Albania in 2019. Wildwood Devon confirmed the bear exhibit is now secure and praised staff and visitors for their calm cooperation.
Difficult words: enclosure (a closed area where animals are kept), measure (a plan or course of action taken to achieve a particular purpose), tempted (wanting to have or do something).
