02-01-2026 07:00

David Fear works for Rolling Stone as a film critic. He shares the five best movies from 2025.

Richard Linklater makes Nouvelle Vague, a movie about French film history where famous directors meet. Clint Bentley takes fourth place with Train Dreams. This movie tells an epic story from the early twentieth century. It is about a life or a railroad worker. Steven Soderbergh created the third movie, Black Bag. In this spy film, a British agent looks for a person who steals secret software.

The second movie is Hamnet. It comes from a famous novel, and shows the tragedy of William Shakespeare’s son and his strong wife. It explains how art helps people overcome difficult situations in life. Paul Thomas Anderson makes the best movie, One Battle After Another. It shows life in modern America and teaches that love helps a broken world.

Difficult words: film critic (a person who watches movies and tells people if they are good or bad), spy (a person who gets secret information about someone, a business, or another country), tragedy (a very sad event or situation).
