The city of wigs – level 3
23-06-2025 15:00
The Chinese city of Xuchang, located in Henan province, is a global leader in the wig industry, producing about 60 percent of the world’s wigs. There are over 4,100 companies and 300,000 workers in the area, with most wigs made from human hair.
Originally, people in rural villages sold their hair to buyers. Today, wigs are still connected to fashion and beauty, although some people wear them for health reasons. Rebecca Hair Products, a major company in Xuchang, used to sell only to the United States. However, it later expanded its business to Africa, where wigs are part of daily life for many people. Now, wigs are popular in Africa, Europe, and other parts of the world.
In 2024, the city exported more than 2 billion dollars in hair products. One shop owner in Nairobi, Kenya, says she first felt unsure about buying from China. But now she is very happy with the quality of the wigs and says no one in Kenya can copy them.
Difficult words: wig (hair you wear on your head), rural (places that are in the countryside, not in cities or towns), expand (to grow or enter new areas).
