The EU-Mauritania fisheries deal – level 2
30-06-2025 07:00
Many small boats get ready to fish near Nouadhibou in Mauritania.
Fishermen from different countries need this work to live. Fish like sardinella give food and jobs to many people. But it is harder to catch fish now, and fishermen must go far out to sea. Scientists say some fish are in danger because people catch too many.
Big ships and fish meal factories also catch a lot of fish. Some factories try to protect fish, but others don’t. Sometimes, there are no fish for days. People want better rules for fishing, which would help fish stay in the sea.
Mauritania and the European Union work together. The EU gives money to build better fish markets and ports. This helps people sell fish and protect fish for the future.
Difficult words: protect (to keep safe), port (a town or city near water where ships come).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What factors have led to fishermen sometimes finding no fish for days?
