The EU-Mauritania fisheries deal – level 3

30-06-2025 07:00

Thousands of small boats are preparing for the new fishing season in Nouadhibou, Mauritania.

Local and foreign fishermen depend on this work to feed their families. They often face harsh and dangerous conditions. Fish like sardinella are essential for food and jobs in the region. However, fishermen now need to go further out to sea, as these fish are harder to find.

Scientists report that many species are overfished and need urgent protection. Industrial ships and fish meal factories have increased fishing pressure. Some companies say they follow sustainable practices, but not all do. Without enough fish, even large factories stop production. A strong management plan is needed to control when, where, and how fish are caught. The plan includes cooperation between Mauritania and the European Union.

The EU supports Mauritania by helping improve ports, fish markets, and research centers. The goal is to make sure fishing provides food, jobs, and income without damaging fish populations in the long term.

Difficult words: overfished (when people catch too many fish, so the number becomes too low), sustainable (able to continue without causing harm).

What aspects does the proposed management plan seek to control in order to ensure long-term sustainability of Mauritania’s fishing industry?
