The human hunters of Sarajevo – level 3

05-06-2025 07:00

In the early 1990s, Bosnia went through a terrible war after the breakup of Yugoslavia.

The capital, Sarajevo, was under siege for nearly four years. Thousands of people died from sniper attacks, bombs, and starvation. Life was extremely dangerous. People could be shot just for walking down the street or trying to find food or water.

A man named John Jordan, an American and ex-Marine, went to Sarajevo to help. He brought clothes and supplies for firefighters and risked his life many times. In 2007, he testified in court and said that wealthy foreigners traveled to Sarajevo to shoot civilians for fun. He called them tourist shooters. According to Jordan, these people were from countries like Italy, the US, Canada, and Russia, and they paid large sums to shoot civilians for fun.

Many people found this story hard to believe. No strong proof was ever found; however, journalists continued to investigate. Whether or not it is true, the idea of people paying to hunt humans during war shows how cruel people can become in times of conflict.

Difficult words: siege (a military attack that keeps people trapped), testify (to speak officially in court), proof (evidence).
