Three years of Russia-Ukraine war – level 2

03-03-2025 07:00

Three years ago, Russia invaded Ukraine, thinking the war would be quick. But now, both countries and the world are suffering.

The war has cost the global economy 2.8 trillion dollars. Ukraine needs over 500 billion dollars to rebuild. Food prices increased, and Europe pays more for gas because Russia is selling less.

The UN says Russia killed 122,000 Ukrainian civilians, and 3.7 million had to leave their homes. About 45,000 Ukrainian soldiers died, and 390,000 were hurt. Russia lost over 750,000 soldiers, with up to 172,000 dead. Thousands of tanks, planes, and ships were also destroyed.

Russia now controls 20% of Ukraine, but many cities there are badly damaged. Ukrainian cities still suffer attacks but continue to work. The war is not over yet.

Difficult words: suffer (to go through something bad or unpleasant), rebuild (to build again), civilian (a person who doesn’t work for the police or army).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How have the financial costs, casualty statistics, and military losses contributed to the overall impact on Ukraine, and what fraction of its territory is under Russian control?
