Tourism may hurt Red Sea beach – level 3
21-04-2025 07:00
Ras Hankorab is a beach in southern Egypt located inside Wadi el-Gemal National Park. It is known for its beautiful nature, clear water, and white sand.
This place is home to many important species, including sea turtles and coral reefs that are strong against climate change. Conservationists say the area is one of Egypt’s last untouched marine ecosystems, and they are trying to stop the government’s plans to build tourist facilities there, like huts, a restaurant, and a farm. The government says these projects are needed to support the economy. Tourism brings a lot of money to Egypt, and the country wants to attract even more visitors. Some government officials believe these areas can be developed without damaging nature. They say development will be controlled and sustainable. However, local people and environmental groups don’t agree with this. They feel left out of the process and not heard. Some locals also lost their jobs and can no longer use the beach freely.
Difficult words: conservationist (a person who works to protect the environment), ecosystem (a natural area where plants and animals live together), sustainable (not causing harm to nature and lasting for a long time).
