Trudeau and Canada’s Indigenous people – level 2
11-03-2025 15:00
In 2015, Prime Minister Trudeau promised to help Indigenous people and lower their high prison numbers.
But the problem is even worse. Indigenous people are only 5% of Canada’s population but are more than a third of those under strict rules after prison.
Marvin Starblanket, from Saskatoon, spent years in prison for violent crimes. Now he is under a five-year supervision order, which controls where he lives and works. Many Indigenous people face these orders, which makes it harder for them to be free. Many of these people are poor, and they have bad past experiences.
Some say supervision helps, but others feel it takes away freedom. Starblanket wants to go to university and help Indigenous people in the future.
Difficult words: violent (hurting people), supervision order (when the court controls someone’s actions), freedom (being free).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How do supervision orders like the one imposed on Marvin Starblanket illustrate the challenges many Indigenous people face, and what future goal does he have to address these issues?
