UK public alert system – level 1

14-04-2023 15:00

On Sunday 23rd April at 3 pm, millions of phones in the UK will make a loud noise and vibrate.

The government will test a new alert system. The sound is like a phone call, but it will last for 10 seconds. It will be a warning sound. People will not answer the call.

Only phones with 4G and 5G can get the message. The government will tell you that it is a test. The test is happening when big events are happening too. For example the London Marathon or football matches. Some people worry that it will distract drivers. The test could also show where people hide their phones. This may not be safe for some people.

Difficult words: alert (quick warning), distract (to draw away the mind), hide (to put something in a place where other people cannot find it).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How do you think this new alert system will affect people's safety?
