US health insurance company wants too much money – level 2
26-02-2025 07:00
The US government is investigating UnitedHealth for possible issues with Medicare billing.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the company reported extra diagnoses to get more payments. UnitedHealth says it doesn’t know about any investigation and denies any wrongdoing. After the news, its stock dropped by 7.3%, and other health insurance companies also lost value.
UnitedHealth is already having legal problems, including a lawsuit from the DOJ about Medicare Advantage. Some experts say the stock drop might be too much because only 15% of its insurance customers use Medicare Advantage.
Government officials continue to watch UnitedHealth’s role in healthcare costs.
Difficult words: billing (asking for payment), diagnosis (saying what a particular health problem is), wrongdoing (a bad or illegal action).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How did reporting extra diagnoses for increased payments affect UnitedHealth’s stock performance and legal challenges?
