Venezuelan migrants in Guantanamo – level 1

25-02-2025 07:00

Around 200 people from Venezuela go to the US. They stayed in a detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But the US sends them back.

Some people say they cannot talk to lawyers. The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, says his government helps them come home. First, the US takes them to Honduras. Then, a plane from Venezuela brings them back.

The US says that some people in the group are in a bad gang. Venezuela says this is not true. The government checks the first group. They do not find gang members. If people do not have problems with the law, they can go home.

Difficult words: detention center (a place where authorities keep people), lawyer (a person who helps with legal problems), member (a person who belongs to a group or organization).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What happens after detainees are held in the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, and how is the claim of gang membership addressed during their return?
