Venezuelan migrants in Guantanamo – level 2

25-02-2025 07:00

About 200 Venezuelan migrants returned from the US to Venezuela. They stayed at a US detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Human rights groups say they couldn’t speak with lawyers, but Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro says his government helped them return. The deportation was not simple. The US first took them to Honduras, and then a Venezuelan plane flew them home.

This is the second deportation in a month. The US says some of the migrants were part of a dangerous gang, but Venezuela says this is not true. There were no gang members among the first group of returnees. People without criminal problems will be free to go home.

Difficult words: detention center (a place where authorities keep people), deportation (sending someone back to their country), returnee (a person who returns to a place after a long time).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How did the deportation unfold and what contrasting claims exist about the migrants' criminal involvement during their return journey?
