War and a nuclear catastrophe – level 2

07-02-2025 07:00

The war in Ukraine is making people worry about nuclear safety, especially at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Rafael Grossi is the head of the IAEA, and he will visit Moscow to talk about Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy system. These attacks are dangerous for nuclear power plants. Russia is trying to destroy Ukraine’s power grid, which is causing problems for electricity and water. If there is no electricity, nuclear plants must use emergency generators to stay safe.

Grossi spoke with leaders from both Ukraine and Russia, including President Putin. He said the Zaporizhzhia plant is in great danger. Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy said that Russia shouldn’t attack power plants. Also, Russia took two Ukrainian workers from the plant.

Difficult words: safety (being safe), power grid (a network which gets electricity to homes), generator (a machine which makes electricity).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the potential consequences of Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy system, particularly in relation to nuclear power plants?
