War and a nuclear catastrophe – level 3

07-02-2025 07:00

The war in Ukraine has raised concerns about nuclear safety, especially at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which has been caught in the fighting.

Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will travel to Moscow to discuss Russia’s continuous attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, which could threaten nuclear facilities. Grossi has maintained communication with Kyiv and Moscow, meeting key figures, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. He noted that the Zaporizhzhia plant, under Russian control, has faced dangerous situations several times. However, he refrained from blaming either side, as the plant is near the front line.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia for attacking energy infrastructure and detaining Ukrainian engineers. Russia’s strikes on power stations risk cutting electricity to nuclear plants, which rely on stable power for cooling systems. If power is lost, emergency diesel generators are the last safeguard against disaster.

Difficult words: refrain (to stop oneself from doing something), condemn (to criticize someone or something strongly), safeguard (a person or thing that ensures protection against danger or damage).
