Washington D.C. fights with mosquitoes – level 1

31-07-2026 07:00

People in Washington D.C. are releasing 600,000 male mosquitoes into the city. This sounds strange, but it works well.

These male mosquitoes do not bite people. They have a special bacterium inside them. When these males meet female mosquitoes, the females cannot have babies. New eggs do not open. The bacteria stop it. Warm weather brings more mosquitoes and diseases to cities. Scientists say that this new way is very safe for people, birds, and fish.

In a few weeks, there will be much fewer mosquitoes in the area. People can stay outside and have a good time without mosquitoes.

Difficult words: release (to let a person, animal, or thing go free into an area), male (the sex which does not make babies, man), mosquito (a small insect which bites people and drinks their blood).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What effect does the special bacterium inside the male mosquitoes have on female mosquitoes and their eggs?
