Washington D.C. fights with mosquitoes – level 2

Authorities released about 600,000 male mosquitoes in Washington D.C. to lower the number of insects. This idea sounds strange, but it works well.
Male mosquitoes don’t bite humans or drink blood. These special males carry a bacterium called Wolbachia. When they mate with female mosquitoes, the eggs cannot hatch, so no new mosquitoes are born. Climate change is making cities warmer, which helps mosquitoes live longer and spread diseases to humans. Experts say that this new method is safe for people, birds, and fish. It doesn’t harm nature or other animals.
Within a few weeks, this project can quickly reduce the mosquito population and help people enjoy being outside in the summer.
Difficult words: release (to let a person, animal, or thing go free into an area), mate (to join together to produce young or eggs), hatch (to break out of an egg or give birth to babies).
